The Thomas Lockitt Lodge No 3371
In the year 1909 Freemasonry in the town of Macclesfield was flourishing, so much so, that members of the two then lodges, (Combermere and Unity) were taking many more years than was normal to progress to the various offices.
Consequently, it was thought by the members of The Combermere Lodge of Union No 295 that another lodge in the town would ease the situation considerably.
It was decided to form a new lodge to be called The Thomas Lockitt Lodge in honour of Wor. Brother Thomas Lockitt, J.P. who had completed fifty years membership of The Combermere Lodge of Union. Of the twenty five founders of this new lodge, seventeen were members of Combermere, and several of those took office.
On the 15th May 1909, The Thomas Lockitt Lodge No. 3371 was consecrated and was the first 'Daughter Lodge' of The Combermere Lodge of Union.
It was unanimously agreed that Wor. Brother Thomas Lockitt should be appointed the first Master of the new lodge. This he fulfilled and sadly later died two years later, on 25th June 1911. In typical Masonic tradition, he lived respected and died regretted.
Thomas Lockitt was a Pharmacist whose Chemist shop was located at 34 The Market Place, Macclesfield. He was an eminent Macclesfield Mason who had been initiated into the Combermere Lodge of Union in the year 1859. He served as its Worshipful Master three times, - first in 1863 then 1872 and again in 1893.
Even today, after almost one hundred years, there remains very strong links between the members of the Mother and Daughter lodges, which much inter-visiting and fellowship
