A Brief History In 1924, the Brethren of The Lodge of Unity number 267, decided to create a Daughter Lodge in honour of Wor. Brother A. Cockayne, who had completed fifty years membership of The Lodge of Unity. The name of the new lodge was The Old Castle Lodge number 4646. The first Master was Wor. Brother W.T. Thompstone, who was also a member of Eaton Lodge number 533 of Congleton.
The Old Castle Lodge was Consecrated on 5 November 1924. All the twenty five Founders of the new Lodge were members of The Lodge of Unity. This first meeting of the Founders on 28th February 1924 was held at The Macclesfield Arms Hotel. It was agreed that The Old Castle Lodge holds its meetings on the 1st Wednesday of each month from September to May, excluding January.
20th May 1924 The Founders were required to submit the names of seven Founders to be shown on the Warrant which had been granted to them.
25th August 1924 It was reported to the Founders that the Warrant of the Lodge was ready and could be obtained on payment of the then existing Grand Lodge & Provincial Grand Lodge fees.
9th October 1924 The Master Designate reported that Wednesday 5th November 1924 had been fixed for the Consecration of the Lodge at the Macclesfield Town Hall.
Wednesday 5th November 1924 The Lodge was Consecration at the Macclesfield Town Hall by the Consecrating Officer W.Bro.Cuthbert Leicester-Warren on behalf of Lieu-Col. Hubert Cornwall Legh, the R W Provincial Grand Master of Cheshire. Thirty Grand Lodge and Provincial Grand Lodge Officers also assisted with the Consecration. On completion of the Ceremony, W.Bro. W T Thompstone was installed as the first Worshipful Master. The Brethren then adjourned to The Macclesfield Arms Hotel for a Banquet. (The cost of the Banquet was twelve shillings and sixpence per head, or 62.5p)
Wed 7th January 1925 At this Lodge Meeting the first initiate of The Old Castle Lodge was Mr W. H. Barber. He was initiated by W.Bro.Walter Wood. Immediately afterwards, Mr S. Bagnall, was then initiated by W.Bro.H.S.C. Rees on the same evening. Subsequently, these two candidates became the Worshipful Master of the Lodge in the years 1933 & 1934 respectively.
Long Service W.Bro. A. E. Barwood had been Lodge Secretary for 25 years (1937-1962). W.Bro H. Hyde was the Lodge Treasurer also for 25 years (1939-1964). The Old Castle Lodge held Regular Meetings at The Macclesfield Arms Hotel (Jordangate) until March 1930, when it changed its meeting place to The Stanley Hall, in Stanley Street, Macclesfield. The meeting in September 1930 was held for the first time in The New Masonic Hall, Riseley Street, Macclesfield where the Lodge has continued to meet since then
