What is involved in being a Freemason?

As a rule, most Lodges meet each month on a regular date. Due to summer holidays, many Lodges take a summer recess from June to the end of August. On average Lodges meet for nine months of the year. Meetings are normally held in the evenings with a dinner afterwards which finishes at around 10pm. The Masonic Hall has a drinks licence and serves drinks after this time, if required.

As the official monthly Lodge meetings usually include a ceremony, most Lodges hold an informal monthly practice meeting. As there is no meal after these practices, they end much earlier.

You may find that as a Mason, your circle of friends expands; it is likely that you may be invited to Lodges other than your own. The number of invitations you receive each year can be considerable so it will be your choice to accept or decline. We have a saying in Freemasonry that whatever you do should be 'without detriment to yourself or connections'.

Suggester Steps
If after reading the pages on this site, you are interested in becoming a Freemason; we advise that you first talk to a family member, friend or colleague whom you already know to be a Mason. They will be able to explain to you everything they can about the fraternity and help you find a suitable Lodge to join.

If you don't know anyone who is a Freemason and you would like to join one of the Lodges in Macclesfield, please send an email telling us more about yourself and your reasons for wishing to join, to: This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

We have included a membership application form on the 'Contact Us' page. Click here; Contact us

Provided we are happy with your application, arrangements will be made to meet you socially to find out more about you, and to give you a chance to find out more about us.

If you live, or want to join a Lodge in another part of the county, The Provincial Grand Lodge of Cheshire is there to help you.
